Air Italia was founded in march 2021 as the new national flag carrier of Italy, in order to offer better connections in Italy. The company took over most of the Swisslines operations out of Rome in 2021.

The company was originally founded by Swisslines Intercontinental Group and was sold to Sabelga in July 2023. Sabelga (until then controlled by Swisslines) was in turn sold to British Falcon on the 29th of July 2023. The company remains close to its former Swisslines Group partners and remains a strong member of the Global Excellence Alliance.
